When and how can you retire from employment

Retiring from Eployment

If you have two or more years’ membership in the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) you can currently choose to take your pension anytime between age 55 and 75, or earlier through ill health. From 6 April 2028, the Government has announced the earliest age that you can take your pension will increase from age 55 to 57. There are several options around how and when you take your pension.

Types of Retirement

Choosing when and how you take your benefits is an important decision. To help you plan and make decisions around your retirement, you can log in to your online My Pension account and use the calculator to run your own pension estimate

And you can also speak to your employer, who can give you more information about what steps you need to take.

Additional Voluntary Contributions (AVCs)

If you have paid additional voluntary contributions (AVCs) to build up a separate pot of money for your retirement, we cannot pay your main scheme benefits until your AVC choice is also ready to be paid. Learn More
