Trustee training and development
Trustee training and development
Building skills, knowledge and understanding is an essential part of being a trustee. Greater Manchester Pension Fund (GMPF) expects all its trustees to undertake regular training and development in order to be able to carry out their roles effectively.
The Local Pension Board is legally required to have relevant knowledge of the rules of the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS), and be aware of key scheme documents recording policy about the administration of the scheme. GMPF expects all its trustees to aspire to the same high level of competency.
All trustees are required to record and submit details of all learning and development activities undertaken so that GMPF can monitor this and evaluate the value of new or additional training activities.
As a GMPF trustee you are also able to access the Hymans Robertson LGPS Learning Academy, Aspire. Through this you will have access to several online learning modules covering a wider range of topics relevant to your role. You will receive an email with instructions on how to log into your learning plan. Please contact Loretta Stowers if you don’t receive an email or if you have an issue logging in.
You should complete the training log form.
Details of the training you have undertaken will be sent automatically to Executive Support and a log of all training kept. These training logs will help to evidence what training has been received and areas where further training could be provided. For Local Board members there is statutory requirement to have pension knowledge and undertake training which can be evidenced by an up-to-date training log. Please make sure that you record all types of training, including attending a course, completing an e-module or reading up on a particular topic.
You can access a skills and knowledge training gap matrix. This matrix highlights all the key areas and topics that you should have some level of skills, experience and understanding of, depending on your role.
If you would like training on a specific topic, please check the training calendar to book onto the relevant training events. Alternatively, complete the training request form and wherever possible, this will be built into the forthcoming training plan.
Yes. The Pensions Regulator has developed a useful resource for trustees. GMPF trustees are strongly advised to complete the Trustee Toolkit.
The Trustee toolkit includes a series of online learning modules and downloadable resources developed to help trustees meet the minimum level of knowledge and understanding introduced in the Pensions Act 2004.
