From the date you join the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS), you get valuable life cover and financial protection for your family.

There are two types of benefits that we could pay if you die:

Dependant’s pension. This is a regular payment to someone dependent on you at the time of your death. For example, a spouse, registered civil partner, or, subject to certain qualifying conditions, an eligible cohabiting partner. We may also pay children who are below a certain age or who meet other criteria.

A lump sum death grant. This is a lump sum, usually paid to the person who you choose to nominate. You should let us know who you’d like to nominate by completing your expression of wish nomination, available in your My Pension account. Alternatively you can contact our Customer Services team and ask for a form to be sent to your address.

Death benefits - video

A quick guide to your death benefits in the Local Government Pension Scheme.

Who can receive a dependant’s pension?

Spouse’s or civil partner’s pension

A spouse is someone who is married to you. By civil partner, we mean someone with whom you have registered your partnership through a civil ceremony.

You can find out how much we might pay to your spouse or partner on your benefit statement which is available by logging into your My Pension account. If you still pay into GMPF, you can use the pension calculator within My Pension to work these out too. This pension is paid for the rest of their life.

Co-habiting partner’s pension

A cohabiting partner is a partner you are living with, in the same way as you would if you were married or in a civil partnership. When you die, if all of the following conditions apply and have done for at least the last two years before your death, then we will pay your partner a pension:

You paid into the LGPS on or after 1 April 2008.

You and your partner lived together as if you were married or civil partners.

You were both legally able to marry or form a civil partnership but chose not to.

Neither of you has been living with someone else as if you were a married couple or civil partners.

Either your cohabiting partner is and has been financially dependent on you, or you have depended on each other financially.

We will ask your partner for evidence that they meet these conditions at the time of your death. Therefore, you should keep copies of documents, preferably in both names and showing the same address, such as council tax bills, mortgage statements or a rental agreement, utility bills and bank statements showing contributions to the household. This pension is paid for the rest of their life.

Children’s pensions

We will usually pay a pension to a child until they reach age 18. If they are in full time education or vocational training, the pension could be paid until they finish their course or reach age 23, whichever is first.

If your child is over the age of 18 and unable to get a job because of a disability, then we may pay a pension to them too.

Any child we consider paying must be your natural child, adopted child, stepchild or child you have accepted into your family.

How are dependants pensions’ calculated?

The amount your dependants receive is worked out using the value of your pension and when you were a contributing member of the LGPS. You can find out how these are calculated in the LGA full guide.

What happens to the extra contributions I have paid?

If you are paying or have paid extra contributions, these may count towards the benefits your dependant receives.

If you started paying Additional Regular Contributions (ARCs) before 1 April 2014 and chose to pay for dependant's benefits: we will pay extra benefits to your spouse/partner and any children. If you are still paying ARCs when you die, we will treat your contract as having been paid in full.

If you bought added years of membership before 1 April 2008: the extra years you bought may count towards your dependants’ benefits. If you are still paying for these when you die, we will treat your contract as having been paid in full. If your benefits are on hold or in payment, the period you bought will count as long as you are married, entered into a civil partnership or were cohabiting with your partner before you left. It will also count towards any children’s pensions.

If you bought extra cohabiting partner benefits before 1 April 2014: An election to pay additional contributions to make membership before 6 April 1988 count towards the calculation of cohabiting partner's pension must have been made before 1 April 2014.

If you are receiving a pension from an annuity purchased from GMPF with Additional Voluntary Contributions: the extra pension you bought will count unless you retired between 1 April 2008 and 31 March 2014 and chose not to provide for dependant's benefits.

There are two circumstances where extra contribution would not count towards your dependant’s pension:

If you are paying, or have paid, Additional Pension Contributions (APCs) or Shared Cost Additional Pension Contributions (SCAPCs) to buy extra pension only.

If you are paying or have paid Additional Regular Contributions (ARCs) but did not opt to pay for dependant's benefits when you took out your contract.

Lump sum death grant

There is a lump sum death grant payable from the day you join Greater Manchester Pension Fund (GMPF) well into retirement.

How much might my death grant be?

Contributing members

If you are employed and paying into your GMPF pension when you die, the amount of death grant will be three times your annual pay.

You can find out how much your death grant might be by logging into your My Pension account and using the pension calculator or by viewing your most recent annual benefit statement.

Benefits on hold

If you have benefits on hold and left:

before 1 April 2008: your death grant will be three times your annual pension that is on hold.

on or after 1 April 2008: your death grant will be five times your annual pension that is on hold.

Receiving your pension

If we are already paying you your pension, we will usually pay a death grant if one of the following applies:

You left before 1 April 2008 and you have been receiving your pension for less than five years – if so, the death grant will be equal to five times your annual pension less the pension we have already paid to you.

You left between 1 April 2008 and 31 March 2014 and you have been receiving your pension for less than ten years – if so, the death grant will be equal to ten times the value of your annual pension less the pension already paid to you.

You left on or after 1 April 2014 - the death grant will be equal to ten times the value of your annual pension less the pension already paid to you and any lump sum taken by giving up some of your career average based pension.

If you left the scheme pre 1 April 1998 then extra factors, such as the length of time that you have been receiving your pension, need to be considered to determine whether a lump sum death grant is payable.

Once you have reached age 75, there is usually no death grant payable.

If you are still paying into your pension when you die and also have separate benefits on hold or in payment (either with GMPF or in another local government pension fund) then the death grant will be the greater of:

The total of any death grants payable from the benefits on hold and/or pensions in payment; or

Three times your annual pay at your date of death.

Who will you pay the lump sum death grant to?

GMPF decides who to pay once we know that a death grant is due. The death grant does not automatically form part of your estate and can be split to more than one person.

To help us to decide, you can tell us who you would like us to pay. You can create or amend your expression of wish by logging into your My Pension account or you can contact our Customer Services team and ask for a form to be sent to your address.

It’s important to complete an expression of wish so we can look to pay the death grant in line with your wishes.

Even though we make the final decision about who will receive some or the entire death grant, we strongly encourage you to let us know and keep up to date, who you would like to receive the payment.

The death grant can be paid to someone other than a spouse or child; this could be the personal representative dealing with your estate, or any person who appears at any time to have been your relative or dependant. If the person or people you nominate are not your closest family, then please consider telling us why. This information might help us when making a decision.

Full details are in the death grant payment guidelines.

Is the lump sum death grant paid tax free?

Death grants are usually tax free. If you do not complete an expression of wish form or have any close family (such as a spouse, partner, children, parents or siblings), we may decide to pay it to your estate.

This may mean that it becomes subject to inheritance tax if your estate exceeds the inheritance tax limit. Paying to the estate can also be a long process if the personal representative has to obtain Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration. So, it’s best to make a nomination if you can.

The death grant will become taxable if we have not paid it within two years of being told about your death, and we can only then pay it to the personal representative.

What happens to my AVC if I die?

The value of your Additional Voluntary Contributions (AVC) are paid as a lump sum when you die.

GMPF must decide who to pay your AVC to. We can choose to pay it to the person or people on your expression of wish form, your personal representative or anyone we consider to be a relative or dependant.

If you left the scheme before 1 April 2014, the rules state that we can only pay the AVC lump sum to the personal representative dealing with your estate.

Extra life cover with Prudential when you die will be paid as a lump sum. GMPF will also decide who to pay that to.

There is a lump sum death grant payable from the day you join Greater Manchester Pension Fund (GMPF) well into retirement.

before 1 April 2008: your death grant will be three times your annual pension that is on hold.

The Good Economy - GMPF

Greater Manchester Pension Fund (GMPF) has had a programme of local and impact investments for a number of years and was recognised in the Impact Investing Institute's white-paper on placed-based impact investing as the only Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) fund to have an explicit allocation to place-based impact investing.

While financial returns can be measured relatively easily, the positive impact that has been achieved can be a little more difficult to measure. The Good Economy are a respected Impact Advisor, producing Impact Reports for some of GMPF’s Local Investment Fund Managers and other LGPS Funds. GMPF commissioned The Good Economy to prepare an independent report to assist us in measuring the impact that has been achieved from our Local Investment Portfolios.

The report concludes that ‘GMPF has a balanced local investment portfolio across asset classes that is meeting its impact objectives of contributing to job creation and place-based local and regional economic development’.

Help with 'My Pension' - GMPF

Registering

How do I register for My Pension?

You will need to follow our secure three step process to set up your account. We recommend using a personal computer if you can, rather than a mobile phone or tablet, and using either Google Chrome or the latest version of Microsoft Edge as your internet browser.

Step 1 – Register

Go to Step 1 and click on the ‘Register’ link where we will ask you to enter some personal details, including your email address. If we already hold this email address for you, we will send your activation link to you by email. It should not take long to arrive, so please check your spam/junk folder if it does not appear in your inbox. Email activation keys are valid for 24 hours. If your activation key has expired, you will need to register again to receive a new one.

If we do not hold an email address for you, or the email address you have registered with is different to the one we hold, then we will send an activation code by letter to your home address, which will be posted first class on the next working day – this activation key will remain valid for six months. If your activation key has expired, you will need to register again to receive a new one.

If you do not receive your activation key, or if you do not think we hold your current address, please contact our Customer Services team on 0161 301 7000.

Step 2 – Complete registration

If you have received your activation link by email, click the link in the email and follow the instructions to complete the registration process.

If you have received your activation code by letter, go to the My Pension homepage on this website and click on the ‘Complete registration’ step, then enter the activation key from the letter. If you enter your details and activation key correctly, you will see the registration screen.

You will then need to enter your personal email address and set up your password and security questions. We recommend not using a work email address, as you may have to change this in the future.

Step 3 – Log in

Once you have followed the first two steps, you can log in to My Pension by using your email address and password. Each time you log in, you will need to answer one of your security questions before logging in.

Here is a flowchart of the process.

Troubleshooting

I have not received my activation key

If we already hold the email address you registered with on our systems, we will send your activation link to you by email. It should not take long to arrive, so please check your spam/junk folder if it does not appear in your inbox.

If we do not hold an email address for you, or the email address you have registered with is different to the one we hold, then we will send an activation code by letter to your home address, which will be posted first class on the next working day.

If you do not receive your activation key, please contact our Customer Services team on 0161 301 7000.

My activation key is not working

Check you are on the ‘Complete Registration’ page of My Pension.

The activation key is case sensitive, so you will need to enter it exactly how it appears in your letter.

If you have input your activation key incorrectly more than three times, your account will become locked, and you will need to request a new activation key. To do this, go back to step 1 to register again. Doing this will immediately invalidate the first activation key. You will need to wait until you receive the second activation key before trying again to complete your registration.

If you have started the registration process again by mistake, instead of completing your registration, any activation key you have already received will be invalidated. You will need to wait until you receive the next activation key before trying again to complete your registration.

I am receiving an error message when trying to register

Here are some of the reasons why you may be receiving an error message.

Have you recently joined your employer?

If so, we may not have received notification from them that you have started. We will write to you as soon as we have been notified, and our letter will include details of how to register. If you do not hear from us, you should contact your employer to check they have sent the notification to us.

Have you already registered?

If so, please go straight to the log in web page to access your My Pension account.

Are you sharing an email address with another My Pension user?

For security reasons, every My Pension account must use a unique email address. Therefore, if you do not already have another email address you can use, you will need to set one up and then request an activation key. We will send you a letter by post that will include your activation key and the next steps to complete the online registration process. We recommend not using a work email address, as you may have to change this in the future.

Have you input your details correctly?

The information you enter must match the information we hold about you on our systems, so it’s important that you enter your details accurately.

Do you have a frozen refund with GMPF?

My Pension is not currently available for members with frozen refunds.

Registering on behalf of my child

If you are a parent or guardian of a child under 18, you can register online to access details of your child’s pension.

We will write to you shortly before your child reaches 18 to let you know that we will be deactivating your online account. If their pension is due to continue beyond age 18, your child must then register for My Pension directly. We will also send you some forms for your child to complete and return to us if they are continuing in education or training. We will then liaise directly with your child.

Logging in

I am receiving an error message when trying to log in

Here are some of the reasons why you may be receiving an error message.

Check you have input the correct email address and password.

Your password must contain a minimum of eight characters, with a least one capital letter and one number. It should not contain any special characters.

Have you used auto fill?

If you auto filled the details, try typing them in instead. Auto fill can sometimes add extra spaces.

Is your account locked?

If you insert the wrong password or security answer three times, you will be locked out of your account. Resetting your password will unlock your account. You can follow the instructions below for ‘I have forgotten my password’ to do this.

Do you have a frozen refund with GMPF?

My Pension is not currently available for members with frozen refunds.

Has the member died?

You will be unable to access the My Pension account of a member who has died.

I have forgotten my password

You can reset your password by clicking on the Forgotten your password? link. You need to enter the email address linked to your My Pension account. We will then send you a link by email that you can use to reset your password. The link is valid for 24 hours. You should check your junk or spam folder if you can’t find it in your inbox. If you do not manage to reset your password within 24 hours of receiving the link, you will need to follow the same process to request another link. Your password must contain a minimum of eight characters, with a least one capital letter and one number. It should not contain any special characters.

I have forgotten the answers to my security questions

You can reset your security questions by entering your email address and password on the login page. You will then see the security questions page. Click on the link Forgotten your response? Fill in your details and click submit. You will receive an email with a link that will allow you to reset your security questions and responses. The link is valid for 24 hours. You should check your junk or spam folder if you cannot find it in your inbox. If you do not manage to reset your security questions within 24 hours of receiving the link, you will need to follow the same process to request another link.

I have entered the wrong answer to my security question

If you have given the wrong answer to the security question three times, you will be locked out of your account. To unlock your account, you will first need to reset your password. You can do this by following the instructions above. Once you have unlocked your account you will then need to follow the instructions for resetting your security questions.

Using My Pension FAQs

Updating your details

How do I change my email address?

Log in to your My Pension account as normal and visit the 'Change my contact details' section under 'My details' to amend your email address. Changing this will change your username for your online account to your new email address. A confirmation email will be sent to your new email address. We recommend that you always use a personal email address and not a work email.

If you do not have access to your old email account and you are locked out of My Pension, please contact our Customer Services team.

How do I update my address?

If you are currently contributing to your pension, please update your address with your employer as soon as possible as they send us your details each month, with your contributions.

Log in to your My Pension account as normal and visit the 'Change my contact details' section under 'My details' to amend your address. Follow the instructions on the page to make sure your address is updated correctly.

If your postcode can not be identified with postcode look up, for example, if your house is a new build, please contact our Customer Services team to update your address.

If you live overseas, please tick the box to show you are an overseas member and leave the postcode field blank.

How do I view or update my lump sum expression of wish?

The ‘Life cover’ section on your My Pension homepage will show you the option to either ‘View my Nominees’ or ‘Nominate someone’.

If you have already nominated someone, ‘View my nominees’ will show the details of your nominees, the date they were last updated, and give the option to amend your nominees.

To update your nominees, follow the instructions, making sure you add your nominees to the correct section, depending on whether they are a spouse or civil partner, a child, or another beneficiary, and press ‘submit’. If you wish to nominate a cohabiting partner, please enter their details under ‘Other Beneficiaries’.

If you are making multiple nominations, make sure the percentage split adds up to exactly 100 per cent. For example, if you are splitting it equally between three people, one will need to be slightly more than the others to equal 100 (eg 33.33, 33.33, and 33.34), otherwise you will not be able to submit your nominees as it will error. You can have up to nine beneficiaries listed.

If you wish to tell us additional information about your nomination that would help us make the decision about who should receive your death grant, please go to the Contact Us page in My Pension and select ‘Additional information about my nomination’ from the dropdown list.

You can read more about how lump sum death grants work on our webpage ‘What death benefits we pay’.

How do I change my bank details?

Log in to your My Pension account as normal and visit the 'View/change my bank details' section under 'My details' to amend your bank account details. Click on ‘Change my bank details’ and follow the instructions.

If you are receiving more than one pension you will need to update your bank details on each record.

Please allow seven working days for your account details to be updated.

If you are changing your bank to a non-UK bank you will need to complete a bank mandate form. To request a bank mandate form for the correct country, please contact our Customer Services team. Visit our ‘Tell us you have move abroad’ webpage for more information about having your pension paid into a non-UK bank.

Navigating My Pension

How do I find my other pension accounts?

If you have more than one pension account with us, you can click on the arrow in the upper right of your My Pension homepage (next to your 'Status') to view your other records.

How do I find my documents?

The My Documents tile on your My Pension homepage will show your annual benefit statements if you are a contributing member or have benefits on hold, and your P60 and payslips if you are a pensioner.

We will also add letters here, for example, when you first join GMPF or when you retire. You can find these in the My Documents tile under 'Letters from GMPF'.

We will notify you by email when we add new documents to your account.

How do I view and download my P60 or payslip?

If you are receiving a pension from us, the My Pension tile on your My Pension homepage will show you the option to view your ‘P60 End of Year certificates’, or to ‘View payslip’.

When you select ‘P60 End of Year Certificates’ a summary of your most recent P60 will appear on the screen. You can click ‘Download your P60 document here’ if you need to print a copy. You can also select a previous year from the ‘P60 certificates’ list if you want to view a summary or download a copy.

When you select ‘View payslip’ your year to date information will show, along with a summary of your most recent payslip. You can click ‘Download your pay advice document’ if you need to print a full copy of your payslip, or ‘Print payslip’ if you want to print the summary. You can also select a previous pay period from the ‘Periods’ list if you want to view a summary or download a copy of an older payslip.

You will receive an email each year when your P60 is available, which is always around the time of your April pay date. We will not email you when a new payslip is added to your My Pension account, but these are available each month.

How do I complete a form and upload documents?

You can use My Pension to complete and upload forms and other documents rather than sending them through the post.

We may ask you to complete and upload a form, for example, when you first join GMPF or when you retire. We will tell you in the letter which form you need to complete. You can click on the link to the form given in your letter or go to the ’Publications and Forms’ tile on your My Pension homepage and click ‘Forms’. You can find all forms in this section.

Our forms are pdf documents. Pdf documents can be opened in your internet browser, but to complete and save your form we recommend using a pdf reader. If you do not already have a pdf reader, we recommend using Adobe reader which you can download for free.

To complete the form, first save it to your computer or device. Then open it in a pdf reader, fill in the form, and click save. You can then upload your completed form to My Pension.

Log into My Pension to do this, and from the My Documents tile select ‘Document Upload’, then select ‘Select files to upload’ to find your completed form and select it.

Choose the document type from the ‘Category’ field drop down box. Check the form’s name if you are unsure what type of document you are uploading, as this should give you an indication. However, if you are retiring and are uploading your retirement form, choose the case number instead of a category. You can check the case number by using the link in ‘Your Requests’.

When you click ‘Upload’, a message will appear in a green banner to tell you that you have successfully submitted the document.

You can use the same method to send us any other documents you need to provide, such as copies of certificates or proof of address.

If you have more than one pension account, make sure you upload your documents to the correct account. You can move between your pension accounts using the arrow in the top right corner next to your status.

Please see the videos below for further guidance on how to upload a document to your online account.

If you are having problems completing any of this, feel free to print the form and post it to us at the address at the bottom of this webpage.

How accurate are the figures?

The figures in your annual benefits statements and on the pension calculator in My Pension are based on your actual pay details and will be accurate in most cases. However, there are some circumstances where this is not the case, and we will need to adjust the figures at retirement. For example, the pension calculator will not include any additional pension you might be buying as part of an additional pension contributions contract. As such, please use the figures for illustrative purposes only.

We recommend speaking to your employer or calling our Customer Services team and asking for confirmation of your actual benefits before deciding to claim your pension. If you are currently paying in to your GMPF pension, you can visit our ‘When and how can you retire from employment’ webpage for more information. If your pension benefits are currently on hold, you can visit our ‘When and how can you access your benefits on hold’ webpage for more information.

Retiring online

How do I retire using My Pension?

If you are currently paying in to your pension, you first need to speak to your employer about retiring. They will then let us know, and we will contact you to tell you what you need to do next.

If your pension is currently on hold, you can retire online by selecting ‘Pay my pension’ in the ‘My Pension’ section on your My Pension homepage (as shown below).

Then, read through the information on the screen and follow the instructions to select your payment date and lump sum conversion choices. Click the ‘Begin payment request’ button to submit your request.

You can only submit a request if your payment date is the date that you turn 55 or later.

You must then confirm your contact details.

Once you have submitted your request, we will send you an email to confirm we have received it. We will contact you within five days once we have carried out some further checks to let you know what happens next.

How do I complete tasks?

As part of the online retirement process, we may ask you to complete some tasks in My Pension. An alert will appear in the ‘Your Tasks’ tile on your My Pension homepage when you have a task to complete (as shown below).

Your tasks will have tick boxes next to them. To complete a task, click on the wording. Additional information and instructions will then appear on the screen. You may need to complete a task by uploading a form. Information on how to do this is in the ‘Navigating my pension’ section.

All the information you send through My Pension is secure.

The check box will change to display a green tick as you complete each task (as shown below).

Once you have completed all your tasks, click on the ‘Proceed to Summary’ button.

You will see a summary of the information you have provided on the screen, including any documents you have uploaded. Please double check that this is correct. You can download or print a copy of the information if you want to.

Click ‘Submit’ once you are happy to go ahead.

A message will appear at the top of the screen to confirm that you have completed all your tasks. If you notice any errors after you have clicked ‘Submit’, you must contact us as soon as possible to amend them.

We will send you an email if we need any additional information. Otherwise, we will email you within ten days to let you know when we will bring your pension into payment. We will contact you if there is likely to be a delay for some reason.

I’ve completed all my tasks, but I’ve not received an email about my pension payment?

Please check that you have completed the ‘Proceed to Summary’ task. You can only do this if you have completed all your other tasks. If you still need to complete this task, it will show as an outstanding task in the ‘Your Tasks’ section (as shown below).

If it is showing as an outstanding task, click on it.

If you have submitted all your tasks but still not heard from us, please check your inbox for an email and your My Pension task list in case there is an additional task for you to complete. Also, please check to see if there is a letter for you to view in ‘Letters from GMPF’ within ‘My Documents’. Otherwise, please call us and we will investigate this for you.

You will see a summary of the information you have provided on the screen, including any documents you have uploaded. Please double check that this is correct. You can download or print a copy of the information if you want to.

Click ‘Submit’ once you are happy to go ahead.

I have a question about how GMPF invests

Being a responsible investor is important to us. We strive to make decisions and create policies that reflect our commitment to investing in the best interests of all our stakeholders and wider society.

We have developed an investment strategy to help us achieve this. We review this regularly and publish it in the form of an investment strategy statement. The statement sets out our beliefs and approach to all aspects of how we invest.

We also have a responsible investment policy that describes our approach to responsible investing in more detail. To find out more, see our webpage How does GMPF invest?

If that didn’t answer your question, please contact us using the form below. Please allow up to 20 working days to receive a response.

Tackling climate change is the issue of greatest priority and importance to us when considering how we should invest. As environmental problems go, climate change is the biggest and most challenging issue we as human beings have ever had to face. The challenges are both complex and profound. As a world, these challenges aren’t something we can overcome quickly and easily, and as a pension fund the same thing applies, and it will take time for us all to make changes that result in a just transition to a zero carbon economy. However, we are already making those changes and are on a journey to meeting our climate change pledges.

CBRE appointed to manage Greater Manchester Property Venture Fund - GMPF

Following a competitive tender process, Greater Manchester Pension Fund (GMPF) is pleased to announce that it will be appointing CBRE Ltd as the new investment advisor for its Greater Manchester Property Venture Fund (GMPVF). The Fund has an £840m investment allocation to local property development, focused on the North West and West Yorkshire.

The prestigious seven-year mandate will see CBRE provide strategic advice to the Fund to help it invest in direct and lending opportunities across the full range of commercial and residential property sectors, whilst meeting its other core investment objectives. These include generating income for the Fund whilst contributing positively to the economic growth and environment of the region through the generation of employment opportunities, improving long-term job prospects, advancing environmental and residential living standards, stimulating further investment, and regenerating urban areas.

GMPVF has invested in property development across the North West for over 30 years, both as a developer in its own right, and also by providing development debt and equity, alongside other developers in the region.

Notable developments supported by GMPVF over recent years include: One St Peter’s Square, 8 First St, Airport City, Circle Square, Manchester New Square, Leonardo Hotel, Crusader Mill, Colliers Yard, Mailbox Stockport and Island Manchester.

Colin Thomasson, Head of Northern Investment, CBRE commented: 'We are honoured to have been appointed to service this significant mandate on behalf of the Greater Manchester Pension Fund. The investment potential across the north of England is exceptional and the scope of this investment programme will enable us to draw on the full power of the CBRE platform, bringing together experts from our Capital Markets, Asset Management, Development Advisory, Lending and Direct Investment Advisory teams to deliver significant value to the Fund over the next seven years. We are excited to build a powerful partnership with GMPF that will drive social, economic and community impact.'

Will Church, Executive Director, Lending, CBRE added: 'Our Lending team within Capital Advisors has originated and deployed over £1.6bn into debt investments across the North West and Yorkshire in the last 12 years, and manage some of the most successful Impact Funds in the UK. We consider GMPF’s ability and commitment to invest in schemes that benefit local communities to be fundamental to the ongoing success of the region and we are delighted to be able to build on our track record of delivering impact outcomes.'

Councillor Gerald Cooney, Chair, GMPF added: 'On behalf of the Fund, we would like to acknowledge the contribution made by the retiring manager, Avison Young (formerly GVA Grimley), in the successful expansion and deployment of the GMPVF allocation over the past 15 years. We now look forward to building a strong and effective partnership with CBRE to successfully deliver against our strategy and drive social, economic and community impact through our real estate investments across the north of England.'

If you are going through a divorce or dissolution of a marriage or civil partnership, the court will account for the value of your pension benefits when finalising any settlement. You and your ex-spouse or partner will each need to inform the court of the value of the benefits you have built up.

Greater Manchester Pension Fund (GMPF) will calculate how much your benefits are worth and provide you with a cash equivalent transfer valuation (CETV) for divorce purposes.

The above charges apply to each pension account you have, and they must be paid before we will calculate the CETV. All charges are inclusive of VAT.

We can only accept payment by bank transfer. Full payment details will be supplied in our letter once we have received a completed Matrimonial proceedings form (P700a).

What happens once I have received my CETV?

Once we have given you the CETV and you have supplied details of your pension benefits to the court, you and your ex-spouse or partner can decide how any pension benefits are going to be split.

You may wish to get legal advice from your solicitor on how to deal with your LGPS benefits during any divorce or dissolution of a civil partnership.

What are the options for splitting my pension benefits?

There are usually three options to choose from:

1. Pension offsetting

You each keep your pension benefits but adjust the proportion of other assets to take account of the value of the pension benefits. For example, you could keep your pension, and your ex-spouse or ex-partner could get a larger share of the value of the house.

2. Pension earmarking

Earmarking is the arrangement that when one person's pension benefits start to be paid, some of it will be paid to their ex-spouse or ex-partner. Please note that earmarking has limitations and isn’t widely used.

3. Pension sharing

The pension is split at the time of divorce or dissolution so that you each receive a separate pension and can continue to build pension benefits for the future. If a pension sharing order is agreed, you will need to pay a fee of £600 for each individual pension account that we need to split. You will need to pay this fee before we will implement the order.

If you or your former spouse or partner, fail to pay the charge in advance, we reserve the right to deduct the fee from your accrued rights or the pension credit. This will result in a permanent reduction to the value of the benefits agreed.

What happens to my LGPS benefits once my divorce or dissolution is completed?

Your pension and any lump sum will be reduced by the amount allocated to your ex-spouse or ex-civil partner at the point of divorce/dissolution. The reduction is called a pension debit.

Your ex-spouse or ex-civil partner will no longer be entitled to a spouse's or civil partner's pension should you die before them.

If you have said that you would like your ex-spouse or ex-civil partner to receive any lump sum death grant payable on your death, this will remain in place unless you tell us otherwise by updating your expression of wish. The court may issue an earmarking order stating that all or part of any lump sum death grant is payable to your ex-spouse or ex-civil partner despite your expression of wish preference.

You can update your lump sum death grant expression of wish details in your My Pension account.

Any children’s pension due to an eligible child when you die will not be affected by your divorce or dissolution.

Yes, if your pension is subject to a pension sharing order, you can still transfer your remaining benefits to another pension arrangement. If you transfer within the LGPS, your new fund will reduce your benefits by the pension debit when you take your pension.

If your benefits are subject to a pension sharing order and you remarry, enter into a new civil partnership, or enter into a cohabiting partnership, then any pension payable to your partner after your death will also be reduced.

If you divorce or dissolve your civil partnership again, your remaining pension rights can be subject sharing order on divorce. The exceptions to this are:

A pension sharing order cannot be issued if an earmarking order has already been issued against your LGPS pension.

If I die, will the dependant pension for my children be affected?

Any children’s pension due to an eligible child when you die will not be affected by your divorce or dissolution.

Can I still transfer my pension?

Yes, if your pension is subject to a pension sharing order, you can still transfer your remaining benefits to another pension arrangement. If you transfer within the LGPS, your new fund will reduce your benefits by the pension debit when you take your pension.

What happens if I remarry or enter into a new civil partnership?

If your benefits are subject to a pension sharing order and you remarry, enter into a new civil partnership, or enter into a cohabiting partnership, then any pension payable to your partner after your death will also be reduced.

If you divorce or dissolve your civil partnership again, your remaining pension rights can be subject sharing order on divorce. The exceptions to this are:
